From September 30 to October 3, a committed delegation from Laos took part in a dynamic peer-to-peer learning exchange on school meals, hosted in the Philippines by the SUN Civil Society Alliances (CSAs) in Asia.
The event brought together experts and practitioners to share strategies for improving nutrition and education through effective school meal programs.
Representing Laos were:
- Mr. Thanongchit Phanthaba, Deputy Head of School Lunch Unit, IEPC.
- Mr. Thongchanh Bouphavong, Program Coordinator, ARMI.
- Mr Soulivanh Vilayphone, Project Coordinator, LDPA Champasak.
- Mr Vatvisa Keosalivvong, Chief of Party, CRS Laos.
The team gained valuable insights and practical knowledge from peers like Vietnam, Sri Lanka, and the Philippines to enhance school meal initiatives in Laos.
Key highlights from the exchange including:
Evidence & Research: Explored the latest findings on how school lunches improve children’s nutrition, attendance, and learning outcomes.
Field Experience: Visited a model school and seed fair showcasing community-driven approaches where local farmers supply nutritious food.
Coordination Insights: Engaged with Philippine government agencies (FNRI, Nutrition Council) and UN partners (WFP, UNICEF) to understand effective program coordination.
This learning journey marks a significant step in empowering Lao CSOs to lead efforts in improving child nutrition and education.
